St. Thomas Airport to St. John: Ferry and Transfer Guide

St. John has no airport, so the trip succeeds or fails at the St. Thomas road-and-water connection.

1. Treat the trip as an airport-to-water handoff

After landing at Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas, the traveler still needs a road transfer and a water crossing. Official USVI guidance lists public ferry, water taxi, and private boat options, with arrivals at Cruz Bay on St. John.

2. Compare the departure areas

Crown BayMarina and water-taxi accessDo not assume public service or same-day availability

3. Use a St. Thomas overnight when the connection is fragile

An overnight is prudent when the flight lands late, luggage is checked, the last practical crossing is close, weather is unsettled, or the St. John lodging is nonrefundable. The goal is not to maximize island count—it is to prevent one delay from breaking the entire first night.

4. Match ground transport to the ferry choice

A transfer request should identify Cyril E. King Airport, the exact ferry or marina, passenger count, luggage, flight number, and intended crossing. Do not book “St. John transfer” without understanding which road and water segments are included.

Compare a prebooked St. Thomas pickup

Verify that the provider serves the exact airport-to-ferry route and does not imply the boat segment is included.

5. Build a fallback before travel day

  • Save the current public ferry information.
  • Record at least one water-taxi contact.
  • Identify a St. Thomas hotel that can absorb a missed crossing.
  • Keep the St. John host informed of the intended arrival.
  • Return to St. Thomas before the final international flight.
