Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama, Bimini, the Abacos, Eleuthera and Harbour Island solve different trips. Choose the island first, then protect the flight, ferry or domestic-air connection that reaches it.
The central decision
“The Bahamas” is an archipelago, not a single transfer zone.
A low fare to Nassau does not automatically solve a Harbour Island, Exuma, Abaco or Bimini trip. Some islands have direct international air service; others require a domestic flight, ferry, water taxi or a combination. The useful comparison is therefore the complete route from the origin airport to the final accommodation—not only the first flight or nightly room rate.
Route rule: do not commit to a non-refundable stay until the arrival airport, inter-island connection, baggage process and final same-day cutoff all work together.
Choose the island system
Six common Bahamas trip patterns
Use the geography and connection burden to narrow the right base.
Grand Bahama
Fly through Freeport for Lucaya-area hotels, beaches and nature. Treat FPO as its own gateway; do not plan it as a casual ground transfer from Nassau.
Bimini
Useful for a compact stay with South Florida air or ferry access. Verify the exact arrival terminal and the onward movement between South and North Bimini.
The Abacos
Use Marsh Harbour or another appropriate port of entry, then map ferries or boats to the selected cay. Weather and final-boat timing matter more than straight-line distance.
Eleuthera & Harbour Island
Eleuthera has multiple airports. Harbour Island requires the correct airport-side transfer and a short water crossing; choosing the wrong airport can add substantial road time.
Exumas and other Out Islands
Prioritize the exact airfield, limited schedules, baggage allowance, grocery and ground-transfer plan. Build contingency around flights that may not operate with big-city frequency.

The Bahamas tourism authority advises allowing at least 1½ hours when connecting through Nassau to an Out Island after clearing Immigration and Customs. Treat that as a starting point, then confirm the airline’s current minimum check-in time and build additional disruption margin.
Where to stay
Choose the base by route role
Gateway base
Use Nassau when flight choice, dining range and simple arrival logistics matter most.
Single-island beach stay
Use Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Exuma or another island when the accommodation and local geography are the trip—not a day excursion.
Cay or ferry-dependent base
Use Harbour Island, an Abaco cay or Bimini only after confirming the final water connection, luggage handling and return-day buffer.
Cruise and land trips
Do not plan a cruise call like an overnight island stay.
A cruise visitor works within the ship’s port time and must protect the all-aboard deadline. An overnight traveler can choose a different island, explore beyond the port area and absorb more local transport time. For a cruise day, confirm the actual port, ship time versus local time, excursion return commitment and the walking or transfer route back to the terminal. Recheck every transport layer close to travel.
Atlantic tropical weather, wind and sea state can affect flights, ferries, small boats and excursions differently. Monitor the National Hurricane Center during the Atlantic season, but also check the airline, ferry, marina, hotel and local authority serving the exact island. A regional forecast cannot confirm that a particular connection will operate.
