2. Getting to Santorini

Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from Athens, London, Paris, Rome, Vienna, and other European hubs. During peak season, there are also charters from the US and Middle East.

Pro Tip Fly into Santorini, out of Mykonos (JMK) — not round-trip from one island. This avoids backtracking by ferry. Mykonos Airport has direct flights to Athens, London, and several European cities. Book it as a multi-city ("open jaw") itinerary.

Pro Tip Book the first Seajets ferry (08:30) — you'll arrive in Mykonos by 10:40 and have the whole day. Summer Meltemi winds can cause cancellations on high-speed ferries in August; Blue Star is more reliable in bad weather. Book all ferry tickets via Ferryhopper.

4. Port Transfers

Ferries arrive at the old port below Fira. From there, you have three options:

Mykonos' main port (Tourlos) is 2 km from Mykonos Town. The new port is further. Pre-book a transfer for reliability.

5. What to Do in Santorini

Sunset in Oia

Oia's sunset is famous — and crowded. The best viewpoint is from the Byzantine Castle Ruins at the northern tip. Arrive by 5:30pm to claim a spot, especially in July–August. If you want a quieter alternative, the Skaros Rock viewpoint in Imerovigli offers an equally stunning sunset without the crowds.

Getting there: Bus from Fira to Oia ($2.50, 25 min) or scooter. Park at the main lot at the entrance of Oia and walk 10 min through the village.

Fira to Oia Hike

The 10 km coastal hike from Fira to Oia takes 3–4 hours and is one of the best things to do in Santorini. Go early morning (6–7am) before the heat. The trail passes through Firostefani and Imerovigli with caldera views the entire way.

Best time: April–June or September–October. July–August is too hot. Bring 1.5L of water per person.

Wine Tasting

Santorini's volcanic soil produces distinctive Assyrtiko wine. Book a half-day wine tour that visits 3 wineries (Venetsanos, Santo Wines, and Hatzidakis are the best). Most tours include pickup from your hotel.

Pro Tip Don't rent an ATV in Santorini — the roads between Fira and Oia are narrow with steep drops. Rent a car with a driver or use the public bus system (Pellas Travel runs regular schedules). Save the scooter/ATV for Mykonos, which has flatter, wider roads.

6. What to Do in Mykonos

Mykonos Town (Chora)

Mykonos Town is a maze of whitewashed alleyways, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants. Don't miss Little Venice — the row of 18th-century houses built right on the sea. The windmills (Kato Mili) are a 5-min walk uphill for panoramic views.

Getting Around Mykonos

Mykonos is compact — about 20 km across. An ATV or scooter is the best way to explore the beaches and interior. The bus system (KTEL) connects Mykonos Town to all major beaches.

Cellular coverage is excellent on both islands. 4G/5G is available in all towns and most beaches. WiFi is available in cafes and hotels but can be slow during peak season. An eSIM is recommended for reliable data throughout your trip.
