Do not rent a scooter or car solely because it is inexpensive. Confirm the license requirement, policy exclusions, helmet or restraint equipment, vehicle condition, and your actual experience before accepting the risk.
Private driver: best for complex days
A private driver is often the lowest-friction choice when a day includes multiple attractions, long distances, children, luggage, or a hotel move. It also reduces the need to find a new vehicle after every stop.
Confirm before booking
- Number of hours and overtime policy.
- Whether fuel, parking, tolls, and attraction waiting are included.
- Vehicle size and luggage capacity.
- Pickup area and the exact endpoint.
- Whether the driver is a transport provider or a licensed guide.
Grab and Gojek: useful for shorter trips
Ngurah Rai Airport’s official transport page identifies designated Grab and Gojek passenger facilities. Elsewhere, ride-hailing can be useful for short trips, but pickup rules, local restrictions, driver availability, and traffic can change by property and area.
- Ask the hotel or venue where app pickups are accepted.
- Do not assume the return pickup will be as easy as the outbound trip.
- Keep mobile data active and verify the license plate before entering.
- Use a vehicle category appropriate for passengers and luggage.
Ride-hailing works best as one layer of the transport plan—not as a guarantee for an early ferry, remote attraction, or time-critical airport departure.
Scooter rental: only for suitable riders
A scooter can be efficient for local movement, but convenience does not remove legal, road-safety, or insurance requirements. An inexperienced rider should not use Bali as a place to learn in live traffic.
Compare only after confirming eligibility
Check vehicle, deposit, documentation, delivery, cancellation, and insurance terms.
Rental car: flexibility with added responsibility
A self-drive car can suit experienced travelers visiting areas with limited on-demand transport, but it adds parking, navigation, traffic, deposit, damage, and insurance decisions. A car with a driver may be better value when the goal is sightseeing rather than driving.
Airport and hotel transfers: protect fixed connections
Use prebooked transport when arrival is late, luggage is substantial, the destination is far from the airport, a child seat is required, or the next connection has a firm check-in time. For ferry departures, plan the hotel-to-harbor leg and the check-in buffer together.
