Itinerary Overview
This 5-day itinerary is designed for a stay on a single atoll (South Male Atoll or Ari Atoll) to minimize transfer time. You'll stay in an overwater villa at a mid-range resort (~$250–400/night) and experience the best of the Maldives without rushing.

Day 1 — Arrival & First Sunset
1
Arrival + Resort Transfer + Sunset
10:00–12:00
Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE). Clear immigration (free 30-day tourist visa on arrival), collect luggage.
12:00–14:00
Transfer to your resort. Depending on location: speedboat (20–50 min) or seaplane (25–40 min). Pre-book your transfer — it's the most important booking after your flight.
Pro Tip
If you arrive on a late flight, stay one night in Male or Hulhumale ($60–120) and take the first speedboat in the morning. This saves $200+ on a seaplane transfer that would only fly in daylight.
14:00–16:00
Check in, unpack, explore the resort. Dip in the ocean from your overwater villa.
17:30–18:30
Sunset from the west side of the island — typically the sandbar at the tip or the overwater bar. Maldives sunsets are 40+ minutes of changing color.
19:30
Dinner at the resort's main restaurant. Most mid-range resorts offer buffet dinner with themed nights (Maldivian, seafood, Asian).
Day 2 — Snorkeling & Sandbank Visit
2
Snorkeling Safari + Sandbank Lunch + Sunset Fishing
07:00–08:00
Breakfast. Maldives resorts typically serve 7–10am buffets. Eat early to avoid the heat.
08:30–12:00
Snorkeling safari to the house reef and 2–3 nearby coral gardens. Most resorts offer this for $40–80. Best spots: turtle cleaning stations and coral bommies with parrotfish, angelfish, and clownfish.
12:30–14:00
Sandbank lunch. A boat drops you on a deserted sandbank with a picnic lunch. This is the classic Maldives photo moment — crystal water, white sand, no one else.
14:00–16:00
Free time — swim, read, nap, or use the resort's non-motorized water sports (kayak, stand-up paddleboard).
16:30–18:30
Sunset fishing trip. Resorts offer this for $50–90. Catch reef fish (snapper, grouper) and the resort will cook your catch for breakfast the next day.
19:30
Dinner. Try the resort's specialty restaurant (usually Maldivian or seafood, ~$50–80 supplement).
Day 3 — Manta Rays & Dolphin Cruise
3
Manta Ray Excursion + Dolphin Cruise
06:30–07:30
Early breakfast (or boxed breakfast from the resort).
08:00–12:30
Manta ray snorkeling excursion. South Ari Atoll is the best spot — manta rays gather at cleaning stations from June–November. In South Male Atoll, you'll find them year-round. Cost: $80–150 per person including gear, guide, and lunch.
12:30–14:30
Lunch on a nearby island or back at the resort.
15:00–17:00
Relaxation time — spa treatment ($80–150 for a 60-min massage) or pool/beach time.
17:30–19:00
Dolphin cruise. Almost all resorts offer this ($50–90). Spinner dolphins are nearly guaranteed in Male Atoll.
20:00
Dinner. Beach BBQ night if the resort has one — typically Tuesday or Friday.
Pro Tip
Book all excursions at the resort's dive center on Day 1 (after arrival). Many resorts offer package deals — 3 excursions for the price of 2. Don't book through third parties; the resort handles logistics and timing.
Day 4 — Island Hopping & Local Village
4
Local Island Visit + Spa + Farewell Dinner
08:00–09:00
Breakfast.
09:30–13:00
Visit a local inhabited island. Resorts arrange this — take a speedboat to a nearby island, visit a local market, see a mosque, lunch at a local cafe. Souvenirs here cost 1/3 of resort prices.
14:00–17:00
Free afternoon. Last chance to snorkel the house reef, kayak, or do a private sandbank photoshoot.
17:30–18:30
Golden hour photoshoot on the overwater villa deck or the resort's infinity pool.
19:30
Farewell dinner — book the overwater restaurant or a private dinner on the beach ($100–200 supplement).
Day 5 — Departure
5
Departure
07:00–08:00
Final breakfast. Check out by 10am (resort checkout time).
10:00–12:00
Transfer back to Male Airport. Speedboat or seaplane depending on resort location. If your flight is late afternoon, the resort may hold your bags and let you use facilities until transfer time.
12:00–14:00
At Velana Airport. The new terminal has decent shopping (duty-free) and cafes. If you have time, take the 10-min ferry to Male for a quick walk around the capital.
